About Us

United General Insurance Company (UGI) is one of the Malawi's leading short term insurance companies and has been operating in Malawi for over thirty years. The company's Head Office is in Blantyre and has two branches in Lilongwe and Mzuzu with a staff complement of 40. Day to day business operations are managed through four Strategic Business Units three of which are in Blantyre and one in Lilongwe. Each unit is responsible for its own underwriting, claims servicing and credit control.

UGI exclusively deals in short term insurances as opposed to life assurance. We provide cover for all types of property such as motor vehicles, buildings, computer equipment, etc including liability insurance.

HISTORY

The original name of the company was Pearl Assurance Company Limited. In 1995 the name changed to Property and General Insurance Company Limited following the sale of the business to Zimbabwe Reinsurance Corporation (ZimRe) as a going concern. United General Insurance Company Limited is a result of the merging of Fide Insurance Company Limited and Property and General Insurance Company Limited as from 1st July 1998.

SHAREHOLDING

ZIMRE Holdings Limited (ZHL) holds 74% shares of UGI while National Bank of Malawi (NBM) holds the remaining 26% shares.

ZHL which is an investment and coordinative company holding a number of synergistically linked subsidiary companies operating in Zimbabwe and within Africa namely Zambia, Malawi, Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Mozambique with insurance as the group's core business. UGI presently has a 22% approximate insurance market share in Malawi and were the second largest gross premium insurer during the 2005 and 2006 insurance years. UGI is both a member of the Insurance Association of Malawi and the African Insurance Organization.

National Bank of Malawi is a financial services company based in Malawi. It was listed on the Malawi Stock Exchange on 21 August 2000 with a total of 450,000,000 ordinary shares.
